Ingredients

  • 1 kg Ratte, Monalisa, or Charlotte potatoes
  • 200 ml crème fraîche
  • 100 ml milk
  • 20 g butter
  • 150 g grated cheese (Comté, emmental, or gruyère)
  • 1 finely sliced onion
  • 1 clove minced garlic
  • Fresh thyme and bay leaf
  • Salt, pepper, and nutmeg to taste


Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes; rinse under cold water and drain.
  3. In a skillet over medium heat, melt the butter; sauté the onion until soft, then add garlic.
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine crème fraîche, milk, salt, pepper, nutmeg, thyme leaves (removed from stem), and bay leaf; whisk together.
  5. In a baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, pour half of the cream mixture over them, sprinkle half of the cheese on top. Repeat the layers.
  6. Cover with foil and bake for about 45 minutes; remove foil during the last 15 minutes for a crispy top.
  7. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
